Tennis BOP would like to congratulate Boaz Mellor from the Taupo Tennis Club on his selection in the Tennis Waikato Bays (made up of Tennis Waikato/Thames Valley, Tennis Western BOP, Tennis Eastern [Hawkes Bay/Poverty Bay] and TBOP) team to play at the Tennis New Zealand National Junior Tournament being held in Christchurch mid-January.
Three TBOP players were selected for the TWB team. They are: Nick Beamish (U16 boys – Rotorua Tennis Club), Tara Purcell (U16 girls – Whakatane Tennis Club) and Boaz Mellor (U14 boys – Taupo Tennis Club).
TBOP congratulates all these players and recognises the hard work and commitment they have shown to reach the ranking required for selection. We wish them all the best in the tournament.
Congratulations to Taupo junior TBOP reps
On behalf of Tennis Bay of Plenty I would like to congratulate the following Taupo Tennis Clubs juniors on their inclusion in the TBOP teams competing in the Junior Tennis Waikato Bays Intra-Regional Quadrangular Tournament.
14 and under: Boaz Mellor and Stacia Haitana
12 and under: Isla Morrison and Sophie Webber
10 and under: Tom Weston.
This year the 10’s and 14’s sections are being played in Hamilton over the weekend 24 & 25 February and the 12’s are being played in Napier over the weekend 3 & 4 March. TBOP is supporting all players by providing a coach to be available in both venues over both days of each weekend.
We wish the above the players all the best at the tournament.
It has been a busy end of year for TBOP and a number of Taupo Tennis players who have been involved in various tournament and challenges.
Boaz Mellor was selected to represent TWB at the National Junior Teams Event in January and played very well, being one the few TWB players who won a match!
The TBOP Residentials were held in March. Tom Weston won the boys 10&U and Bo Mellor won the boys 14&U titles. Congratulations to both those players.
The junior Quadrangular Tournaments were held over the two weekends Feb 24th/25th and March 3rd/4th. TTC was well represented in these teams. TWBOP proved too strong this season, but hopefully our turn will come.
The Senior Rosebowl Tournament (played between the 4 associations of the former TWB) was played in early April in Napier and Taupo Tennis Club member Andy Mellor was selected for the TBOP team. Tennis Eastern won this tournament.
April 8th saw a large TBOP junior team (28 players) take on a challenge from Counties Manakau. This was a tightly fought challenge with both teams equal at the end of the day on 21 matches. TBOP narrowly edged out Counties Manakau on a countback on sets by 3 sets. It was a great opportunity for our players to play against unknown opposition. Boaz Mello, Sophie Weber, Isla Morrison, Tom Weston represented Taupo Tennis Club. Stacia Haitana was to be in the team but her opposition pulled out so she did not travel to Rotorua.
Junior Squad coaching will continue over the off season on Tues and Wed evenings in Rotorua.
